He will be back. Yay?
Variety has confirmed that the sixth installment in the Terminator franchise will debut on July 26th, 2019. Linda Hamilton will be back, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back, James Cameron will produce, and Deadpool’s Tim Miller will direct. The film is planned as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day and the start of a new trilogy from a story by Cameron and Miller with a script being developed by David Goyer(Oh gosh) and Josh Friedman.
Look I don’t know exactly how to feel about this. I love the first two Terminator films. It’s one of the first film franchises my mother introduced me to and I hold the first two films in a special place in my film heart. I don’t mind Rise of the Machines, I like how Salvation looks, and haven’t seen Genisys. But I feel like the Terminator franchise needs to rest for a while or go back to its television roots, possibly exploring the war? I don’t really care to see any more time travel or to see another explanation of why the T-800 looks older than he did in the 90’s. Plus can we all agree that Terminator 2 is an exceptional ending to an exceptional two-parter? I mean few franchises can walk away like that giving its characters a meaningful end and tying up the loose ones. I just don’t feel the need to continue the Connor story.
But let’s look at the bright side here. Cameron is coming back and not just as a promoter in a Youtube video. Tim Miler is an exceptional talent that will at the very least give us a visually enticing Terminator film. Linda Hamilton coming back is also enticing because it is going to be great to see an older actress kicking cyborg ass.
Is there good here? Yes. But I’m just a little tired of the 30-year old sequel where the old generation passes the baton to the new generation. The Connor Terminator story had an ending, a good one at that and I just hope this sequel is worth continuing the story.
P.S. I think the plot of the new one will involve some doomsday lover trying to restart Skynet.
