Two Christmas classics that don’t exactly need to be Christmas movies. Not that that’s a bad thing. That’s part of why the concept can work so well.
‘Home Alone’ used Christmas just as a backdrop to tell the story. Plus, Kate having a harder time getting back to Kevin, because of the busy holiday travel period, helps a lot. Home Alone has problems, but a lot of the movie is very iconic. The places it goes is more refreshing for this type of movie.
‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ is on a much larger scale, having Kevin by himself in New York City. While the movie can be enjoyable, ‘Home Alone 2’ definitely feels a lot more stale, with how much it borrows from the first one. For example, Kevin has a similar relationship to Old Man Marley that he does to the Pigeon Lady, but the relationship just doesn’t work as well. You just can’t easily replicate something like that.
Regardless of ‘Home Alone 2’s’ shortcomings, it and, especially, ‘Home Alone’ are fun to watch around Christmas time. ‘Home Alone 2’ has that effect that plenty of bad Christmas movies have in that they’re still fun to watch, despite the quality not being that great.
