AVA: ‘Alien’ vs. ‘Aliens’ (31 Nightmares #17)

31 Nightmares, Movies

Warning: controversial opinion incoming.

The ‘Alien vs. Predator’ movies, ‘AVP: Alien vs. Predator’ and ‘Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem’, were garbage and made further mockery of beloved movie villains. One of those villains being the Xenomorphs, who have been more fortunate, compared to Predator, when it comes to the silver screen.

The first film, ‘Alien’, was directed by Ridley Scott. Scott, however, didn’t return for the sequel, Aliens, as he told why in an interview with The Hollywood Interview.

Ridley Scott directed ‘Alien’ but didn’t direct ‘Aliens.’ In a 2008 interview with The Hollywood Interview, Scott said why he didn’t come back.

“They didn’t ask me! To this day I have no idea why. It hurt my feelings, really, because I thought we did quite a good job on the first one.”

James Cameron ended up directing Aliens, after making quite a name for himself with ‘The Terminator’ (1984).

Both films are revered for their blending for their different stories, as well as their memorable characters, that blended sci-fi with a different genre. With ‘Alien’, it was horror, and with ‘Aliens, it was action. another genre. The real question is though, which one is better. For most people the answer is clear as a nice sunny day, ‘Aliens.’ For me the answer is also simple, ‘Alien’ is a much better film than ‘Aliens.’

Don’t take this as me saying ‘Aliens’ is not a good movie. ‘Aliens’ is good but just, overall, feels underwhelming. There’s still a lot of great things about it. I have that problem consistently with some action movies. They just feel a little stale after a while.
